Kas naftalekke peaks rahule jätma?

Bryan Walsh vahendab Time'is ekspertide arvamusi, mille kohaselt oleks ehk kõige mõistlikum Mehhiko lahe naftaleke rahule jätta ja lasta antud leiukohal lihtsalt naftast omas tempos segamatult tühjaks voolata.
But what if the best thing to do when oil leaks is...nothing? That was the tentative conclusion of several British experts at a briefing in London on Monday, who raised the possibility that the best plan could be to try to corral the oil when it's out to sea but otherwise leave it to disperse and evaporate naturally. They suggested that the all-hands-on-deck response of the White House, Coast Guard and BP—tends of thousands of response workers, thousands of ships, burning oil out to sea and dosing the spill with over 1.5 million gallons of chemical dispersants—might ultimately have more to do with politics than the environment.

Spioonivara mobiiltelefonis

Jessica Ramirez uurib Newsweekis, kui tõsine on mobiiltelefonide kasutamisega seonduv nuhkvara probleem ja avastab, et mobiilikasutuse järele spioneerida on tänapäeval üllatavalt lihtne ja odav.
Among the top commercial spyware vendors who have ventured into this space areFlexiSPY, MobiStealth, and Mobile Spy. While the services vary, what they do is essentially the same. According to all three spyware Web sites, a person must have legal access to a smart phone to install a piece of spyware. For example, if you’re spying on a family member, that means the phone is family property. If you’re an employer monitoring your employee, the phone should be company-owned. To install the spyware, you have to have the phone in your possession for at least a few minutes to download the app. (There are apps that can be downloaded remotely, but that’s less common and not legal.)

Kas me naaseme Kuule?

Robert Lamb küsib Discovery Channeli saidil ekspertide arvamusi selle kohta, kas ja millal me Kuule naaseme ning miks me peaks sinna üldse minema.
Nearly 40 years have passed since Apollo 17, our last journey to the moon. Sure, President George W. Bush talked up a return trip, but President Obama's plans for NASA don't seem to include jaunts to the Sea of Tranquility. So are we going back to the moon? You bet we are.

Kuidas me eksime

Newsweek tutvustab Kathryn Schulzi raamatut Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error, milles autor uurib, kuidas ja miks inimesed eksivad.
What makes us human—that we can speak? Love? Build atomic bombs? How about, instead, our never-failing ability to be wrong? Employing psychology, sociology, philosophy, and history, peppered with dozens of personal and quirky anecdotes, Schulz explores what it means to err, why we do it, how it makes us feel, and ultimately, why it’s a vital part of who we are. But here’s the twist: screwing up actually makes us better, and embracing it is the best way to get life right.

Aju teab tulevikku paremini

Rebecca Boyle tutvustab Popular Science'is teadustööd, mille käigus selgus, et fMRI tehnoloogia abil läbi viidud ajuskaneering paljastas inimese tulevikukäitumist täpsemalt, kui ta enese prognoos.
The researchers studied brain activity of people who watched public-service announcements about the importance of wearing sunscreen. They focused on two brain regions, the medial prefrontal cortex and the precuneus, which are both associated with self-awareness. The subjects -- mostly UCLA students -- were asked how they felt about sunscreen and how likely they were to use it. The researchers gave the subjects sunscreen to be sure they'd have access to it. A week later, the participants reported how much sunscreen they actually used. About half had been able to accurately predict their behavior. The neuroscientists developed a model that compared the subjects' brain activity to their own predictions, and found the model was accurate 75 percent of the time.

With the 2010 World Cup in full swing, many have argued that soccer has hit a new height in its status as the world's global game. But does that belief apply to the United States? Despite a respectable round-of-16 appearance, here are seven reasons why the World Cup craze will not translate to America's perennial arena for the sport: Major League Soccer.
