Piinatud aedviljad on tervislikumad?

James Williams kirjutab Discovery Channeli veebisaidil, et rängalt väärkoheldud aedviljades on enam antioksüdante, mistõttu need on tervisele kasulikumad.
Most of us make carrots into a salad. Luis Cisneros-Zevallos makes carrots into biofactories capable of producing five times more antioxidants than they otherwise would. He does it not through genetic modification, but rather by using a carrot's natural response to changes in its environment. And by "changes in its environment" he really means assaulting them with knives, shredders, and ultraviolet light.

If a planet could orbit our sun at a distance equivalent to the sun's radius without burning up, its year would be about 3 hours.

Kuidas kosmoseprügi võib meid ahelrünnata

Clay Dillow vahendab Popular Science'is ekspertide hoiatusi, mille kohaselt võivad meie koduplaneedi ümber tiirleva kosmoseprügi kokkupõrked põhjustada ahelreaktsiooni, mis annab meie mugavale igapäevaelule ränga hoobi.
Our satellites are sorely outnumbered by space debris, to the tune of 370,000 pieces of junk up there versus 1,100 satellites. That junk ranges from nuts and bolts lost during spacewalks to pieces of older satellites to whole satellites that no longer function, and it's all whipping around the Earth at a rate of about 4.8 miles per second. The fear is that with so much junk already up there, a collision is numerically probable at some point. Two large pieces of junk colliding could theoretically send thousands more potential satellite killers into orbit, and those could in turn collide with other pieces of junk or with satellites, unleashing another swarm of debris. You get the idea.

Vananedes õiglustunne muutub

Rachael Rettner kirjutab LiveScience'is, et lapsed ja täiskasvanud saavad erinevalt aru sellest, mis on õiglane.
What we consider "fair" changes as we age, a new study finds. Young children like all things to be equal, but older adolescents are more likely to consider merit when it comes to dividing up wealth, the researchers say. The shift from the "egalitarian" view of fairness to the more merit-based "meritocratic" view occurred largely between fifth and seventh grade, although it continued to change through high school, with seniors placing the most importance on achievement.

Hambapesu on südamele kasulik

Emme Wilkinson tutvustab BBCs teadustööd, mille käigus leiti taas tugev seos kehva suuhügieeni ja südamehaiguste tekke riski vahel.
A Scottish study of more than 11,000 adults found those with poor oral hygiene had a 70% increased risk of heart disease compared with those who brushed twice a day.
