Avaldatakse Philip K. Dicki eksegeesid

Dave Itzkoff kirjutab New York Timesis, et kirjastus Houghton Mifflin Harcourt kavatseb kahe eraldi raamatuna avaldada 1982. aastal surnud kultuskirjaniku Philip K. Dicki kirjeldused ja tõlgendused tema poolt alates 70ndatest aastatest kogetud religioosse ja kosmilise iseloomuga hallutsinatsioonide kohta, mis on loetavamasse vormi toimetatud kirjanik Jonathan Lethemi ja Dicki eksperdi Pamela Jacksoni poolt.
Mr. Lethem described the books as a chronicle of the period in which Mr. Dick “pulled himself together again, as a writer and a human being.” “He’d been launched into outer space by the visions of the early ’70s,” Mr. Lethem said, “and he was going to try to come back with the truth. And that, by definition, is an impossible task.” He added: “It’s absolutely stultifying, it’s brilliant, it’s repetitive, it’s contradictory. It just might contain the secret of the universe.”

Spordijook hakkab mõjuma hetkega

New Scientist tutvustab Aucklandi ülikooli uurija Nicholas Ganti katseid, mis näitavad, et füüsilise koormuse ajal tarvitatav spordijook hakkab mõjuma hetkest, mil sa seda keeleotsaga puudutad.
Gant says it's likely that taste receptors detect carbohydrates, resulting in a signal to fatigued muscles "that help is on the way" so they continue working hard.

Patrick Rothfuss pajatab oma blogis esimest otsa pidi ka eesti keelde tõlgitud fantaasiasarja Kingkiller Chronicle teise osa The Wise Man's Fear kirjutamise edusammudest ja avaldamise plaanidest.
So that’s part of the news, that I’ll be finished writing The Wise Man’s Fear by September. But here’s the rest of the news: that means that the book can’t come out until March of 2011.

Toidu liigne soolamine on eluohtlik

Franco Cappuccio ja Simon Capewell kirjutavad New Scientistis, et toidusoola liigtarbimise vähendamine aitaks maailmas päästa miljoneid elusid.
Decreasing salt intake substantially reduces blood pressure, thus lowering the risk of heart attacks and strokes. An analysis of all the available evidence, published in 2007, suggested that reducing salt intake around the world by 15 per cent could prevent almost 9 million deaths by 2015. That is on par with the public health benefits of reducing cholesterol and stopping smoking. Other analyses have concluded that cutting daily salt intake by 5 grams could reduce strokes by 23 per cent and cardiovascular disease by 14 per cent. The benefits of salt reduction may also extend further. Links have repeatedly been reported between high salt intake and chronic kidney damage, stomach cancer and osteoporosis.

China Miéville võitis taas Arthur C Clarke'i auhinna

Alison Flood teatab Guardianis, et China Miéville võitis oma romaaniga The City & the City Arthur C Clarke'i auhinna ning püstitas priisi kolmandat korda taskusse pistes omalaadse rekordi.
The novel won the British Science Fiction Association prize for best novel earlier this month, when BSFA journal editor Niall Harrison predicted it was set to take a slew of further prizes. Miéville pronounced himself "absolutely gobsmacked" and "incredibly honoured" to win the Arthur C Clarke, an award originally established by Clarke himself to help promote science fiction in Britain.

Kohv on tervisele kasulik?

Sarah Klein kirjutab CNNis, et kuigi kohvijoomist on peetud traditsiooniliselt ebatervislikuks tegevuseks, näitavad viimasel ajal läbi viidud teadusuuringud, et regulaarselt tarbitav tassitäis kohvi teeb tervisele pigem head.
But recent research suggests that despite the downsides of coffee, the "devil's brew" does have an upside: Coffee drinkers may be at lower risk of liver and colon cancer, type 2 diabetes, and Parkinson's disease.
