Kes kandideerivad Arthur C. Clarke'i auhinnale

Alison Flood tutvustab Guardianis parimale aasta jooksul esmaselt Suurbritannias avaldatud scifi-romaanile määratava maineka Arthur C. Clarke'i auhinna finaliste.
"It's a very strong selection and quite varied, reflecting science fiction publishing in this country," said chair of judges Paul Billinger. "There are novels from people well-known in the genre – Miéville, Robinson and Roberts – but what they have written is not perhaps standard SF; they don't have space ships, but these books are clearly SF."

Päikesesüsteemi vaatamisväärsused

Scientific American viib oma veebisaidi külastaja muuhulgas Hugoga pärjatud kunstniku Ron Milleri abiga Päikesesüsteemi kõige põnevamate vaatamisväärsuste ekskursioonile.
Artist Ron Miller takes us on a journey to eight of the most breathtaking views that await explorers of our solar system. The scale of these natural wonders dwarfs anything Earth has to offer. What might we see and feel if we could travel to these distant domains? By interpreting data from probes such as NASA's Cassini, which is now exploring the Saturnian system, and MESSENGER, which goes into orbitaround Mercury in March 2011, the artist's eye allows us an early visitto these unforgettable locales.

The team was studying the effect of the lunar cycle on the toads, which only breed during one month a year in a shallow pool on an Italian lakebed, when they noticed the seismic behavior. Over a 29-day period, Grant and her colleagues had been watching the toads at their breeding site, and got the opportunity to see them before, during, and after the quake. Five days before the earthquake, after spawning had just begun, the number of male toads at the site decreased by 96 percent. Six days after the last significant aftershock, the toads came back and produced the rest of their spawn.

Mõõdukas shokolaadisöömine on südamele head

Denise Mann kirjutab CNNi terviselehel, et regulaarne mõõdukas shokolaadisöömine alandab infarkti- ja insuldiriski.
"Dark chocolate exhibits the greatest effects, milk chocolate fewer, and white chocolate no effects," says the lead author of the study, Brian Buijsse, a nutritional epidemiologist at the German Institute of Human Nutrition, in Nuthetal, Germany.

Philip Pullman - The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ

Guardian on avaldanud katkendi kristlikes ringkondades juba enne ilmumist laialdast meelepaha põhjustanud Philip Pullmani raamatust The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ.
At that time, Mary was about sixteen years old, and Joseph had never touched her. One night in her bedroom she heard a whisper through her window. "Mary, do you know how beautiful you are? You are the most lovely of all women. The Lord must have favoured you especially, to be so sweet and so gracious, to have such eyes and such lips . . ." She was confused, and said "Who are you?" "I am an angel," said the voice. "Let me in and I shall tell you a secret that only you must know....

But the very simplicity of the iPad masks its transformational power. Some say the iPad heralds a new era of computing, and I'm inclined to believe them. The interface is so intuitive—navigating with your fingers rather than a keyboard and mouse—that it will change what we expect from our computers. Today we talk about "getting on the Internet," but with iPad you can have a persistent online connection, and that's a pretty profound shift. Combine the form factor with the 24/7 link to a store, and you have the perfect machine for impulse purchases. The iPad could eventually become your TV, your newspaper, and your bookshelf. Pretty soon, Apple might even become your cable company—sort of—by selling subscriptions, via iTunes, to individual shows or channels. Say you're reading the latest Henning Mankell on your iPad. While you're sitting there with it in your lap, why not check your e-mail or flip on an episode of The Office?
