Bill Christensen tutvustab LiveScience'is teadustööd, mille käigus õnnestus spetsiaalse arvutiprogrammi abil inimese ajuaktiivsust analüüsides taastada seda tekitanud videolõigud.A computer program was used to search for links between the configuration of shapes, colors and movements in the videos, and patterns of activity in the patients’ visual cortex. It was later fed more than 200 days’ worth of YouTube internet clips and asked to predict which areas of the brain the clips would stimulate if people were watching them. Finally, the software was used to monitor the two patients’ brains as they watched a new film and to reproduce what they were seeing based on their neural activity alone. Remarkably, the computer program was able to display continuous footage of the films they were watching — albeit with blurred images.

Tarkade Klubi detsembrinumber
Inseneride tehniliste oskuste jõudmine aatomite tasandile on avanud neile uue ja tohutu tegevusvälja, räägitakse lausa nanotehnoloogilisest revolutsioonist. Mida head see revolutsioon meile lubab, mis suunas tegutsevad Eesti nanoteadlased ja millele juhivad tähelepanu hoiatavad hääled, vahendab Tarkade Klubi detsembrinumbri kaanelugu. Persoonirubriigis on tähelepanu all TTÜ geneetik Heiti Paves, kes uurib, mida teevad taimedes need ained, mis loomades lihaseid liigutavad, selle kõrval aga jäädvustab fotodena mikroskoobist paistvaid imelisi pilte ning need on talle toonud auhindu juba mitmelt teadusfoto võistluselt.

The result, from Kevin Hall and colleagues at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, is about 25 percent higher than similar estimates made in recent years.

What they don't tell you: It's true that animal products tend to have much higher carbon footprint than food produced from plants. Hence vegetarianism tends to be a good idea from an environmental point of view. The devil is in the detail, however, because certain dairy products are more "carbon intensive" than some meats. In particular hard cheese, which takes a lot of milk to produce, can have a bigger footprint per kilo than chicken. So while cutting out meat – especially beef and lamb – definitely makes ecological sense, the benefit will be reduced if you make up the calories by consuming more dairy. The most effective way to reduce the emissions of your diet is to go vegan – or as close as you can get.

It showed that microscopic worm-like structures found in a Martian meteorite that hit the Earth 13,000 years ago are almost certainly fossilised bacteria. The so-called bio-morphs are embedded beneath the surface layers of the rock, suggesting that they were already present when the meteorite arrived, rather than being the result of subsequent contamination by Earthly bacteria.

Michael Crichtoni esimesest postuumsest romaanist
Tim Rutten arvustab Los Angeles Timesi raamatublogis Michael Crichton postuumset romaani Pirate Latitudes ning arutleb üldse pikemalt surnud kirjanike avaldamata teoste teemal.His 15 novels and four nonfiction works have sold a staggering 150 million copies worldwide. Fourteen of his books were made into films. By the time he died last year at the age of 66, he'd also written or co-authored 10 screenplays and created two television series for which he wrote multiple episodes. In 1994, he became the only writer in history to achieve what might be called the popular author's grand slam, when he simultaneously had the top-grossing film in theaters, the most popular series on television and the country's bestselling book. (The movie was " Jurassic Park," the series was "ER" and the novel was "Disclosure.") This week's posthumous publication of "Pirate Latitudes" certainly won't undermine that legacy, but neither will it do much to burnish it.

Jack Torrance's little boy Danny was last seen recuperating in Maine after escaping the insane evil of the Overlook Hotel, but Stephen King is now plotting a sequel to The Shining which would age the clairvoyant boy to 40 and transport him to a New York hospice. Speaking to an audience of fans in Toronto about his new novel Under the Dome, King divulged that he'd begun working on a tentative idea for a follow-up to The Shining – first published in 1977 – last summer.
